Some things about halibut I didn't know

Here's an interesting video that taught me something new. First, I didn't know halibut travelled in schools. Cool. I also thought they were primarily bottom fish because people are always catching them jigging or trolling just off the bottom. Well these guys look like they were fairly close to the surface in some instances, or at least higher up in the water column then I expected.

yeah daver,

this vid has been bounced around this forum a fair bit. The smaller hali tend to school up like this on the surface on rare occasions. not sure why but it has been documented a fair bit. Ive never seen it!

as for the schools on the bottom, I think they tend to team up like wolves from my experience. I always catch multiple halibut around the same size in a short period of time.

In once case we got a triple header of 80 to 100 lb fish and every halibut had a octopus leg hanging out of its mouth, this leads me to believe that they teamed up on an octopus like a pack of wolves would have. Kinda cool really!

would be nice to know why those smaller ones come to the surface like that!

wooly,

i watched a school of ping pong paddles destroying a small bait ball as i trolled by,, was neat to see ..!!
