Subject: FN0529-Salmon: Sockeye - Non retention Closure in Southern B.C. Tidal Waters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fraser River Panel met on Monday July 28 and received an update on the
status of Fraser River sockeye stocks and fishery catches to date. The summer
run component of this years return currently appears to be tracking at the 75%P
level of 1.182 million. At this run size there is no available recreational or
commercial TAC.

Therefore the current status of the Fraser River sockeye return does not
provide for any additional recreational sockeye retention opportunities at this
time in most Southern B.C. waters.

Effective Wednesday, July 30, at 21:00 hours until further notice, the quota
for sockeye has been varied to zero (0) in those Southern B.C. marine waters
that are currently open to the retention of sockeye (Area 12, Subareas 12-1 to
12-4, Areas 13 to 15, Areas 16 to 28, Area 29 including the tidal waters of the
Fraser River downstream from the CPR Bridge at Mission, B.C., Areas 111, 121
and 123 to 127).

Sockeye retention is currently closed and will remain closed in the following
areas:

- Queen Charlotte Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound, (Areas 11, 111 and Subareas
12-5 to 12-48);
- Area 16 including Sabine Channel;
- Nitinat Lake (Area 22).
- Area 23 (Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet;
- Subarea 29-8 (Boundary Bay);

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

A Fishery Notice with an update on the status of Fraser River sockeye stocks
will be provided Monday PM Jul 28.
