Subject: FN0453-Salmon: Gill Net - Area D - Area 23 - Barkley Sound Sockeye

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Area 23
Gill nets open 14 hrs, 06:00 to 20:00 Tuesday, June 27, in Subarea 23-5 and portions of Subareas 23-3, 23-4 and 23-6. Numukamis Bay, San Mateo Bay, Effingham Inlet, Rainy Bay and Uchucklesit Inlet are closed. Min. mesh 100 mm., max. depth 60 meshes, max. hang ratio 3:1, corkline to web distance min. 0 cm, max. 2 m. Coho and steelhead may not be retained. Six strand Alaska twist web, conventional multi-strand web or a combination of the two may be used. There will be no additional fishing time this week. Variation Order No. 06-Sal-23-GN-01.

The target catch for this fishery is approximately 15,000 sockeye.

The preseason forecast for Somass sockeye is 570,000. At this time there is not enough information to deviate from this forecast. The commercial allocation at this run size is 74,159, 60% seine (44,495) and 40% gill net (29,664).

Seine test information, June 19-20: Estimate 17000-20,000 sockeye in outer Alberni Inlet, 5,000-7,000 sockeye in Inner Alberni Inlet indicating low abundances of sockeye to date. Sockeye escapements and recreational catches are low relative to previous years at this time. Test set information is available on the internet at:
http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/xnet/content/salmon/testfish/default.htm

Fishermen must hail their catch to a service provider within 24 hours of the closure of the fishery. Vessel masters should read their licence conditions carefully. Non-compliance with conditions of licence could result in enforcement action. Salmon log books are mandatory and can be obtained by phoning the currently approved salmon logbook provider - Archipelago Marine Research - at 1-877-280-3474. Harvest information must be recorded by 23:59 h for each day fished AND before any fish are landed.

The Department and the Area D Salmon Gillnet Association recommend that gill net fishermen in Area 23 use a minimum of 5 additional white floats, approximately 12 inches in diameter, spaced equally along the corkline, to make their nets more visible and thus reduce the number of collisions between boats and nets.

All indications thus far suggest the run is again tad late, and is indeed following the pattern established last year. Suspect it will be another week or so before things start to heat up.

Barkely Sound has picked up well for springs this week, and the outside has recovered from the period of heavy tides producing good showings of springs and flatties. Guess we'll have to make do with that for the time being... LOL!

Cheers,
Nog
