Sierra Manifolds and Risers after 350 Hours

Hi all,

I am super paranoid about the mechanical systems on our boat and am always watching engine temps. Even the most diligent owner won't catch an internal riser or manifold failure so as we approach season 5 on this current set of Sierra Manifolds and Risers, I had them removed and preemptively replaced (or so to be once all the new hoses arrive) with Volvo equipment.

Anyway here are some pics of the removed manifolds and risers. It should be noted this is a FWC equipped Volvo Penta 320GXi that spends at most 45 days in the Straits. It is dry slipped and I flush it with fresh water after each haul out.

You can see the water side on the risers is on its way, the manifolds are not easy to see what's going on within without a borescope. I also had the heat exchanger removed and hot tanked, plus the starter pulled and rebuilt since Hourston basically left NO room to reach these critical areas.

Cheers

Look fairly normal for 5 years, I change mine every 6 and that’s with regularly flushes. My boat sits in the water for maybe 1 month max then pulled and flushed and I run it at least once a week while in the water

Thats not to bad seen alot worse I swapped out to what they call a dry joint system.

there is a place in vancouver that sells it I think its called HGE marine if I remember so . its a very neat system as it has way bigger water flows and almost impossible to get water into engine from corrosion and I really like there gasket system as its proper marine ones not the crap thin paper ones.

Dry joint would cure a lot of this. The newer volvos and mercs I believe have gone this route. I looked at those guys and decided to go volvo original, for warranty and in the hope next time they are due for replacement we can swap them out for a v8 all motor 300 hp verado lols
