Sadly, but not surprisingly, DFO et al (including “us”) are repeating this same mistake on our West coast.

“The federal government report shows the stock continues to cling for life in what officials classify as the critical zone, meaning “serious harm is occurring to the stock.” Population growth has been stagnant ...” - sounds an awful lot like too many of our steelhead and salmon stocks!

Cheers!

Kind of typical response...chase fishery restrictions as the big response to recovery without actually taking the time to fully understand what is mostly contributing to the declining population and then take meaningful and coordinated action to actually address those specific threats. 30 years of fishery restrictions and no recovery....hmmm, I see how well that works.

Yup, not only collapse the population with more than a century of unsustainable over harvest, but also drag the ocean bottom endlessly destroying the ecosystem and preventing it from recovering. Again, over harvest and ecosystem-scale habitat destruction are things we’re all too familiar with on our coast.

Cheers!

I have spent a fair bit of time over the last 2 months working with different fisheries groups on the east coast. To the best of my knowledge the 10 million seals and no predators is having the largest impact. To the point that more fisheries will be collapsing to feed the mass.

Yep, and the ENGOs involved in this debacle (IFAW, SSS, and Greenpeace) and their minor royalty that dominate their structures still have been getting their extravagant salaries all this time. AT least Greenpeace apologized for their part in it: https://www.greenpeace.org/canada/e...pology-to-inuit-for-impacts-of-seal-campaign/

But Watson, Anderson, Bardot and the other malignant narcissists and lesser Gods have done nothing wrong apparently. Gods and royalty don't make mistakes:

Irrespective of their own, individual culpability and actions. Ignorance is truly bliss...

This documentary shows a much more balanced narrative of the legacy of those individuals:
