A couple of important meetings relating to the 2011 fishing season are coming up and organizers are hoping for the best possible turnout.

The South Coast Sports Fishing Advisory Board is holding its 2010 post season meeting in early December in Nanaimo, but local anglers are asked to take in a meeting this Wednesday night in Langford in order to provide guidance to local reps who will travel to Nanaimo. Anyone with an interest in salt water sports fishing is invited to attend.

The Langford event is set for 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday in the West Shore Ballroom at the Four Points Sheraton Victoria Gateway Hotel at 829 McCallum Road.

Ron Neitsch of Eagle Eye Outfitters in Sooke had helped distribute the call to attend in a mass emailing effort on November 18.

Neitsch said on Saturday that interested parties such as fishing guides routinely receive these sort of messages, but this time he was careful to include anyone with a stake in economic development (businesspeople, politicians, etc.) in the address field.

"The DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) is again threatening to put restrictions on our upcoming fishing season in Sooke, which will have direct impact on many of our bottom lines," stated Neitsch in the communique. "A lot of time, money and energy has been spent on economic development in our community. These DFO decisions (on a number of points, including size limits on wild chinook salmon) have a huge impact on whether many will decide to come and fish in Sooke this year."

Chris Bos – local Victoria-area Committee Chair with the Sports Fishing Advisory Board – is organizing the Wednesday function. In the invitation he assured there will be room for lots of people in the ballroom for the meeting, important "as again discussion will focus on how Early Timed Fraser Chinook will affect our fisheries next spring and the difficulties with the 2011 sport halibut season."

By phone Friday, Bos said the halibut issue "is an allocation between commercial and recreational, and it's not working."

He was referring to a formula that allocates 88 per cent of the fish to commercial interests, the remaining 12 per cent to sports fishers.

Plenty of detailed information on these topics and more will be shared at the Wednesday session in Langford.
