Thanks for your question on fishery resources. I am very opposed to the privatization of our fishery resources, especially halibut. We need a fair and sustainable solution to the allocation of fishery resources which will balance the needs of both the recreational and commercial fisheries while remaining within science based conservation boundaries and respecting aboriginal rights. NDP Fisheries critic Fin Donnelly was very outspoken in opposing privatization in the last parliament and he and Victoria MP Denise Savoie co-signed a letter to the Conservative Minister demanding a more fairer and sustainable future. I am also opposed to the conservatives suggestion that the sale and purchase of unused quota is some sort of fair solution in the face of the existing imbalance in the allocation of fisheries like halibut. You can count on me to speak out for a better way of dealing with our common fishery resources.
