Hicks speaks out over fishing closure

August 26, 2011
The recreational halibut fishing season ends September 5th for Canadians and fishing operators are speaking out against the closure.

Juan de Fuca Regional Director and fishing operator Mike Hicks says the closure sends a message that catching the fish is not a right, but a privilege.
"Industry wise it's absolutely devastating and the bigger picture ... the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Government of Canada has just taken the first step in privatizing a common property resource: halibut. The next one will be salmon."
Hicks is calling on area MPs to champion the cause for recreational fishermen.
"They say that they stand up for the working man and the common man. All the rights have just been swept away two days ago and these people know nothing about the issue, they say nothing about the fishery, they don't do anything and they are our federal representatives. It's a sad time."
Hicks was speaking with Murray Langdon Wednesday morning on CFAX 1070.
