Mercury 3.0 Diesel outboard now on their website…

You can make any direct Injected 2 stroke a deisel with some modifications to the computing, and some to the onboard electrical devices like a fuel pump for example. Evinrude did this years ago with their 55 hp etec they built for the US defense dept.

The optimax was and still is the biggest train wreck of an outboard in the history of outboards.

Btw anyone want to but a pair? Lol

I think that Merc diesel has been around for 5+ years.

Just came to say the same thing. It's been around for years and years. Was originally offered to military customers where diesel may be easier to find than gasoline (ie refueling on a larger patrol vessel). I don't really see this as a modern option for recreational customers

low compression spark ignition means that they'll have less torque than any other diesel motor out there

It would be foolish to deny the first half decade of teething problems but it is amazing that almost 30 years after introduction they are still in production in basically the same form.

The 40% increase in fuel efficiency would make them shockingly efficient.
