In Parliament, Keith just blasted the gov't (Fisheries Minister Gail Shea) for failing to have a scientific investigation into our sockeye collapse. He also blasted the minister as to why she has failed to increase our marine protected areas from the current pathetic .5 percent. ABout time!!

Let Keith know your concerns with the state of our Pacific salmon and he may be the voice that brings these important issues to Parliament!!

Keith Martin's first point is very valid and there should be an investigation as to why there was such a difference between what DFO forecasted 2009 Fraser Sockeye adult return would be and what actually showed up.

However, point two on the Marine Protected Areas is actually a bit of a red herring as DFO are currently leading the pack and designing a coast-wide suite of MPAs where fish protection and habitat protection take precedence. They are working to a deadline of 2012 to identify and start establishing MPAs up and down the coast. Plus Parks Cda are looking to develop National Marine Conservation Areas in Gwaii Hanaas and Southern Georgia Strait (eventually 5 in BC oceans) and Environment Cda are looking at closing the Scott Islands area too!

Since the early 1990s it was the former Liberal governments that dragged their heels on MPA establishment. Hence Canada is way behind the world in MPA designation. We do have two MPAs on the west coast - the seamounts and the hot vents. But get ready because a lot of new closed area proposals are coming soon. And closed areas means no fishing too!

Keith is a great advocate for our wild salmon stocks and certainly worth being in touch with on issues that the sitting government need to be kept honest about.

I have been involved in BC fisheries for over 35 years. I have met quite a few of the past DFO Ministers and had a chance to watch how they perform.

The WORST IMHO were Herb Dahliwal, Tom Siddon, the guy with the girls name from Newfi and this latest burned-out light bulb from the Maritimes.

We and the fish deserve better.... where are the people of vision and committment in government?

Keith Martin is one of the few MPs that actually works and gets things done!

I agree. I believe this guy is a straight shooter and goes to bat for his constituents.

Not so sure this isn't just an opportunity to get some free media attention and be seen as fighting for a worthy cause. When was he last seen at any important SFAB or SFAC meetings helping to rally the troops? Just another politician jumping on a bandwagon (late) to hang onto some votes. We need some really dedicated to the cause people in the higher ups of the Federal Ministry!!!!
