From what I have heard from the older generation of boaters those steel brackets were super light and very strong. They were made by Gil which later became Armstrong. The reason I believe they dropped them was when the super heavy four strokers came in and the obvious corrosion issues. If you zoom on the photo of that 20’ Hourston (not the attached picture of the boston whaler) it’s a Mercury 150hp 2 stroke which was 403lbs according to the NADA guides. I believe the other reason they were used was to keep the LOA down (Something I don’t like about my pod).
