Harpoon or Shark Hook for Halibut?

A Harpoon is fine when the water is relatively calm and the Halibut comes up flat but when it's rough/or the Hali comes up head first the Shark Hook is superior to a Harpoon.
'Nanook of the West' I ain't

Can shoot hali's in Canada? I know we can it the states but I had alway heard that it is agianst the law up there.

Why would you need to shoot when you should be releasing halibut over 75# which are all female spawners?

I use a halibut gaff
http://www.go2marine.com/g2m/action...ss_steel_halibut_gaff_harbour_mechanical.html
I have made some lasso's out of hollow braided rope with a lasso on one end and a 3/8" dowel about 12" long embeded on the other end to stiffen it up. The lasso end goes around the tail and the dowel'd end goes under the gill plate and out the mouth, then I pull tight and pull the tail towards the head and now I got a fully restrained halibut. At that point i can bring it into the boat, slit the gills to bleed and throw a wet burlap bag on it to keep it cool. I have a shark hook on a line and a harpoon for back up although I've never used them.

Everyone has their own technique Im sure, but this works for me and my boat.

I think letting the 75 lb + flatties back is a good idea, the meat is getting a little course anyways. Reel Easy, how do you release them, cut the line or bring them onboard and bull the hooks?

Marula,

Regarding those gotomarine hali gaffs - what is you preferred length?

Thanks - 5Salt

Hey Joe are you related to Dick Cheney??? Oops i shot my friend instead of the Hali. As Red Foreman would say Dumb butt.

Tournament Proven !

My hook is about 20 inches, if you have lots of freeboard you might want a little longer. They work great and take little force to imbed. I get the hali close to the boat carefull not to lift its head out of the water , reach under its gill plate area and give a quick tug up and lift it out of the water. Never lost one yet that way and they stay calm while I put on the lasso.

Same goes for the BIG ones?
You haul em in before being trussed?
YIKES!

I have a sub-floor locker that can accomodate a 50#'r or so. If it don't fit, it doesn't come in untill it's dead AND trussed.

marula. I'm thinking that you have a big aluminum jobby w/ a huge locker w/ easy access...

My cockpit however is only comfy for two. Not two PLUS a five foot Hali. AND it's only made of Tupperware.

I'm a firm believer that these fish nead to be restrained and contained in SOME form.

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!.

Mr. Dean

Your absolutely right!

Need to add to the post, yes before I bring them into the boat I lasso the tail and slip the rope up their gills and pull em tight untill they are a suitcase. I havn't yarded one much over 70 lbs yet but if I hooked onto a really large one I would harpon it with a float.

I agree, I've seen them things lay on the deck hog tied for over 1/2 hour or more with no gills then suddenly they spring to life and start kicking. Brains the size of a cherry, but lots of brawn.

Pheeeeew!

I thought so. Thought it was a good idea to clear it up for the Newbie Hali Hunters that may be following.

Enjoy the day!

I am anxiously awaiting Wolf's expertise and guidance on this one!

Sounds all good to me carry on. What one does on his/her boat and it works for them go for it.
