Jigging or Drift Fishing for Salmon

I finally got a Shimano Type J Talavera rod. Used it for the 1st time on a very quick trip sunday with my daughter. It handles a 6-8oz (not sure which it was largest pt wilson dart)) jig very nicely, better than my stiffer jigging rods actually. I liked it. We were only out for an hour or so, hoping for lingod just off the edge of Wilby shoal. First fish on the rod - cabezon about 8 lbs (guessing). I was really pleased until I saw it, it felt like a keeper lingcod. We also caught 5 small lingcod between 20-23" or so (which is all I ever seem to get).
I liked the rod, I will be interested to see what its like with salmon.
I put a shimano triton speedmaster I had on it. It differs from the usual older Triton in that it is 6-1 retrieve and open faced rather than level wind or with a cage like an older penn. I find it a good match
