Gold River Steelhead

Have they swum the Stamp?
i heard there are none as well?

Murph reported a whole six landed for the season.
A buddy of mine has landed the same - at a rate of 10 - 12 days per fish.

IHN ramifications methinks.

So, at what point does the Government shut down ALL fishing for steelhead until this run is restored?
One wonders if they would actually consider shutting down Sockeye fishing to save these fish?
Apply the same rules for these fish as they do for the Fraser?

Bet that no one wants to do this.

Was IHN found in the Stamp system?

Yes. The low returns of Sockeye in GCL, the IHN in Chinook at Robertson Creek, and the Steelhead collapse may all be related.

Rainbow and Steelhead are apparently the most susceptible to IHN. It appears to be endemic in Sockeye here.
In 2014/15 it was in Robertson Creek Chinook and the Steelhead at the hatchery had to be destroyed.

Under these conditions, it may not be possible to restore these runs.

Sure miss that river and the fishing quality it used to produce. Spent lot's of days on it during the 80's and 90's. Usually smaller Steelhead but the odd larger one as well. Known for their very acrobatic fights. And used to get into a lot of Coho there as well.

Obviously this river and others are in dire jeopardy but just to note though the snorkel counts are often way off from what we've seen when it comes to comparing snorkel counts with brood angler catches. Have been present for snorkel counts where zero fish were seen yet several fish were caught in the same runs on those swim days. Seen these same results on multiple rivers over the years. Haven't fished the Gold for so long and some of these rivers deserve shutting the fishing down on them completely for sure for multiple cycles.

192 Hatchery fish weighed in the Wally Hall derby on the Veddar and again that's only the guys in the derby ?? Average weight 11.5 lbs.. Nice size hatchery fish.. Not too late to save the Gold

Depends ... as there are not enough wild fish for brood stock, what would you suggest?

Brood from the Stamp, oops, forgot, there are no wild winter runs left in the stamp either.
Yup, there's the problem, there aren't enough wild fish left for broodstock, pretty much everywhere.
Some tough decisions will have to be made irt hatchery enhancement protocols, things like as you suggest, genetics from other systems, because it's unlikely these stocks will ever recover without some serious intervention. Even then it's doubtful.

Don’t you know there is a secret stash of rainbow trout just waiting to populate the gold again we just need to wait a few hundred years.

Maybe the Province can be convinced to finance a hatchery program for the Gold with the secret stash of cash left over from the royalties & taxes earned from logging the watershed bald. I am sure Christie Clark would publicly support this.
