Elwha River Dam Removal

Very interesting to see the salmon are already making a comeback with the removal of the two dams.

From what I understand, the Elwha produced a strain of very large springs...hopefully they will return as well.

The Elwha is the Fraser of the Juan de Fuca. The removal of the dam was the direct result of actual government action to help save the killer whales of this area. Good story hopefully we can do the same on this side of the line.

Yup, the Elwha is a great story. It will be interesting to see how the estuary and river unfold over the next while. $325 million to remove the dam! Goes to show that salmon are pretty damn important in some parts of the coast... let's hope our gov't starts to feel the same way :)

There is the possiblity of doing something on thi side of the stait to help our killer whales. The Nitnat hatchery has only been running at 50% of their Chinook production cabibilities. They have been doing 5 million but have and can do 10 million. Budget cutbacks has been responsible for the unused capacity. If we can find the funds to cover the extra 5 million Chinook production these fish could be net penned around the Sooke and Victoria area to provide much needed food for the whales and also kick start the recovery of the Sooke River back to abundant Chinook returns.
