Dsc and Vhf radios....

It's not the big boys you have to worry about in the fog! its the guy with his new gps and no radar who thinks its ok to be out in 100 foot visibility because of the "I'm alright" attitude that seems to be taking over in boating.
The reality is all the fancy gear in the world does not replace common sense.
 
X2, they are the threat out there. There should be a marine law requiring that if you do not have radar, you can't proceed from port in fog conditions. I've come close to being run over a few times by some ding bat with no radar motoring along at 30 knots looking straight down at his gps and not even bothering to look out the window. On same token, AIS would make tracking the big boys a lot easier than plotting the radar all the time.
