Cobra VHF/GMRS Radio

Hey all,

Saw this product from Cobra the other day -- pretty nice little package if you are looking for a portable handheld. It's a standard 5 watt VHF handheld that also has the GMRS and Weather channels. GMRS is nice because you can have a private conversation one of the 850+ channels with a buddy as long as both of you are on the same channel.

Saw Amazon had them selling for $165 which isn't too bad for a portable handheld.

Do you see a problem with it? Looked to be a standard radio from what I could see?

No-- but since Cobra has several radios that appear similar on thier product list, just a good idea to make sure which one you are buying. But looks like a good deal, especially Amazon price

GMDSS is it the same as GMRS? Seems different. How about DSC? I am sure this is not all the same.[?][?]

No, not the same at all. GMRS defines the set of high power channels you can use for personal communications on a handheld walkie talkie type device (2 watts max in Canada, no license required). We use little GMRS radios all the time with the family when we are skiing or going on multi-vehicle road trips: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmrs

GMDSS is a Marine Distress calling system -- this radio doesn't seem to have that service. It can't transmit a DSC because it doesn't have a GPS -- I *think* all new radios have to receive DSC calls if I remember correctly from the VHF course, but the manual does not indicate whether it does or does not.
