Catching your own bait

What is the method of catching the herring? After you catch them what is the proper way to handle them to achieve the best bait?

Buy a Sabiki Rig, which is just a bunch of tiny snelled single hooks each with a tiny bit of mylar or fish skin on, all attached in a row to a leader maybe 4 feet long in total.

Attach that to your main line and a sinker to the bottom of the rig.

When you see bait lower the rig down and bring it up slow the Herring are usually on it like white on rice.

Now you have a bunch of flopping twisting scale shedding Herring to deal with.

I have used them live just flipped 'em into a bait well but prefer brined as it makes a better cut plug if you have a heavy hand like mine.

Fill a cooler with seawater and ice. Enough ice so it doesn't melt away. Add a bunch of rock salt and make bait. Pick up a stack of those foam meat packing trays from the local butcher and vaccum pack in dozens for another day's fishing. Avoid handling them at all costs to save scale lost. Grab the lead and shake directly into cooler.

We Sabiki herring and chovies for live and frozen bait all time. Very satifying considering the cost and quality of most commercial bait available these days.
