Area 23 Bamfield 2 under 77 cm

Nice to see them looking after our interests....NOT! How about the commercial guys clobbering them offshore I believe to the tune of 7500 fish. DFO look after GOV't interests who look after their buddies!

Lots of trollers in August off the north end of the island.
I know a commie that claimed best fishing of his life off of Esperanza.
All Jumbos. Didn't even have to cheat on the "plugs only"

Here you go...don't personally agree with this decision. I'm thinking it was more motivated by saving the salmon derby than saving our future fishery. I can only hope DFO collects a bunch of data from the fish caught in the derby to double check their original analysis. I'm certainly not seeing the numbers of large age 4 females that would suggest we open it up to whack and stack big one's.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0966-Recreational - Salmon: Chinook - Area 23 and 123 - Barkley Sound - Daily Quota Limit Change Effective Immediately

Effective immediately until 23:59 hours October 15, 2015 the daily quota for
the tidal recreational fishery for chinook salmon will be two (2) chinook per
day one of which may be greater than 77 cm in the following area:

Area 23 and that portion of Area 123 shoreward of a line drawn one nautical
mile seaward of the surfline.

Variation Order Number 2015-426

On August 31, 2015 Department staff met with the Area 23 Harvest Roundtable to
discuss the Area 23 chinook tidal water recreational fishery. At this meeting
the Roundtable was informed by DFO South Coast Stock Assessment staff that
preliminary in-season indicators for Somass chinook were larger than
forecasted. This change was based on recreational CPUE’s and current
escapements, which suggested a higher return. This prompted the current change
in the chinook conservation measures.

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal waters of British
Columbia.

The term "marked" means a hatchery fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head Recovery
program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped chinook and
coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical information for
coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery Program

Anglers are advised to check http://bcsportfishguide.ca for fishing closures
and other recreational fishing information.

Hopefully, they won't open a commercial net season for chinook. That's part of the reason for this issue in the first place.

Out today...had customers on the boat who didn't want many fish. We released 7 chinook (under 77cm) retained 2 under 77 cm, released 3 sub-legal chinook, lost 3 under 77 cm chinook at the boat and 1 other I didn't see. We also retained 2 coho and released 1.

I realize that is only one single day's report, but its pretty much similar to most days out there. I don't see many large over 77 cm fish, and thus have formed the view that we should be very concerned for the large +77 cm spawners.

Seems to me that the decision to go to 1:1 places too much risk on these fish, and not just because of what the Rec sector takes. Case in point, I'm hearing the FN fishers are planning a "Show Them" fishery after the derby. In other words they plan to run larger mesh nets to intentionally intercept large spawners. So the risks are not always what we think they are!
