Anchoring Barkley Sound

Hi,

I’m a new resident in Alberni Valley and am looking forward to spending a few nights on the hook in Barkley Sound. Not going to ask for your favourite spots, would welcome tips, but rather would like to know if there are places to avoid. Bad bottom or winds or bugs etc ... I’ve got Peter Vassilopoulos’ books where he talks about a few but there surely more than he mentions.

Port Alberni yacht club is a good place. Look online. The broken group has good spots.

Can certainly vouch for Port Alberni Yacht club/ Robbers Passage. Have also anchored at Jarvis island in the little cut that opens up inside. Beautifully protected spot. Just watch the rock coming in.
You can use this free app to scout around the sound. Just look for the anchor symbols.

The bay behind Gilbert island is good, but bring mosquito repellent. We call that island Mosquito Island for a reason.

Thanks for the input. I’ll check out the yacht club and the apps. Figured there would mosquitoes and horseflies.

We use Effingham bay quite often when were around there. (broken island group)
