Amended Requirement for Flares

Does anyone know for sure if Transport Canada’s amendment to lower the requirement for flares from six to three for vessels 6- 9 metres with VHF radios was ever approved. I have seen it in the Canadian Gazette, where it appears to have been passed into legislation, but all the current tables still say 6.

I was sold 3 for a 36' boat at the Chandler.

Seems it depends on whether or not your boat is classified as a "pleasure craft" or not - and the length. See s.203-209: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2010-91/FullText.html

It also says on the webpage that: "Regulations are current to 2021-06-28 and last amended on 2021-06-23."

thanks Agent found it in the reference you provided. I kept finding the table but missed this paragraph further on.

• 3) For a pleasure craft more than 6 m in length, the number of pyrotechnic distress signals referred to in subitems 2(b) and 3(b) of the table to section 205 and in item 2 of the table to section 210 may be reduced up to a maximum of 50%, provided the number of smoke signals does not exceed 50% of the permitted number of smoke signals in those tables, if the pleasure craft is equipped with
  • (a) a means of two-way radio communication;
  • (b) a 406 MHz personal locator beacon that is the subject of a technical acceptance certificate issued under subparagraph 5(1)(a)(iv) of the Radiocommunication Act, worn by the pleasure craft operator; or
  • (c) a 406 MHz emergency position-indicating radio beacon.
