Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0323-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Sockeye - Area 23 - Barkley Sound, Alberni Inlet, and tidal portion of the Somass River - Opening

The 2013 preseason forecast return is 350,000. The Department has been working
with the Area 23 Salmon Harvest Committee and the Port Alberni SFAC and has
agreed to a sockeye fishing plan which includes the following:

Am I missing something here? They are talking about 4/day commencing June 15, with a preseason estimate of 350,000 sockeye? Last year they predicted 700,000 sockeye and then upgraded the run to 800,000 fish. They were looking for an escapement of 366,667 sockeye, leaving a surplus of 433,333 sockeye. Last I saw, they did not get the escapement they were expecting. Short by about 40,000 fish. A 4 sockeye per day retention for sporties, means a commercial opening isn't far away...but with those numbers?

Good morning River Rat.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go to China creek this weekend for sockeye fishing?
July 12-13-14th not able to get any reports on whether or not fishing has improved?
Where can I find out if the commercial guys are going back into the Alberni Inlet?

Just got back from China creek, the bite is on and action seems pretty steady....Argent one was out today so we should see some numbers later on. Some bigger fish seem to be pushing in as well in around 30-50 feet
