This week I picked up a mid 80's Honda 9.9 for a kicker for a steal. Guy said it hadn't ran in 2 years but it started second pull. Wasn't pissing water so I took the leg off and re-set the vanes on the water pump since some were going one way and some the other. Still wasn't pissing, so a blast of compressed air into the tell tale cleared a blockage and it started peeing strong. Carb bowl needs a new gasket since it's leaking there, and I have to check the oil pressure light to see if it's burned out, since it wasn't turning on when it was running. Easy enough to check, just need to ground one wire to the housing to see if it's fried or if the oil pressure sender isn't sending. For $250 I'm not complaining.
Just need a kicker bracket and a fuel line plumbed and I'll have back up power. For plumbing the kicker, I am going to run another line off my fuel water filter with a primer bulb and shutoff valve. I'd also like to look at a larger fuel tank as well - maybe 12-15 gallons, depending on what fits.
The point of the VHF and kicker is so I can head over to the Gulf Islands safely and not get stuck rowing across the strait. Even for local fishing it's extra peace of mind. Haven't had a chance to test the VHF since Steveston Marine didn't have any 3' antennas in stock...so waiting on that. Going to get nav lights and a BIG ******* horn installed too sometime soon. I'd love to shoot 120 dB of WTF are you doing at the turkeys that plow water through a fleet of fishing boats. Still need to mount my river anchor and roller for Sturgeon fishing in the fall (if I have time), but aside from that, she's pretty well close to being done.
Turning wrenches aside, this boat catches fish - have had some awesome days out there with consistent action.
