In search of FUGLY 2

My first boat was a 14 1/2 foot Hourston with a 50 horse Merc - manual start no electrics. Made the run from Horseshoe Bay to Gibsons several times. Once came in from Centre Bay to Horseshoe Bay in the dark with my 7 month pregnant wife - no lights! Back in the young and dumb days. Surprised we survived some of the stupid things we did!

Buying a boat may kill this thread for Jeffy, but I agree that it would be great to keep it going. It also actually opens a whole new thread.... The "LessFUGLY" refit project. AS you mod the boat, post photos and show us how you take a really good platform and turn it into a WestCoast machine!

Congrats on the purchase Jeffy,.

Thanks finaddict, i gotta get home n go get the boat first.. But will update with progress in a new thread...

I believe the budget is approx. 40K

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Willing to go anywhere in BC.

Cheers.

Nice work Jeff, congrats. Going to be fun rigging it all up, that's the best part. Have you bought your kicker yet, Inlet marine has very good pricing. Keep us posted on the build up.

Thanks Dmurph , going to inlet marine by the end of the week to pick up the new kicker, they have been extremely helpful..

Great boat Jeff, nice to see you finally pulled the trigger. I am new to the forum and live up North, but my cousin is on the island and just starting the search for his first boat. We have been interestingly watching this thread. He is looking for something like you just picked up. I am sorry to see this thread come to an end as we were getting some really good pointers from experienced fishermen who know what to look for in a fishing boat. He doesn't mind looking at, but not naming his boat fugly 2 as you have that name patented, LOL. If the consensus is to start a new thread I would understand. However if anyone had some good input for a fisherman's first boat in 17 to 19 foot range we would be more than happy to listen intently.

Remember when buying these older boats, many of them were not built for the weight of a four stroke. I know...... The reason for the work on my Silver Streak last spring was prep for a new four stroke that's hanging off my boat now thanks to the guys at Inlet Marine. Had I not done this work the engine well would have been full of water 24/7 and I would of been stern heavy with my bow in the clouds. Think of this when testing out the boat you may be buying. Times have changed since that boat may of been built.

A sweet mod for your new boat Jeff would be a top like red hot has on it. Something to mount rod holders to and stand under. Makes a boat feel a lot bigger imo. I even take out one of my pedestal seats while trolling to give more walking room. Makes for a roomy little boat.

Im pretty sure it can handle the 9.9, a 6 hp would do it but i want to plan ahead for in a couple years when i upgrade again, a two stroke 70 is pretty light for a 17' Hourston, should have no problem accomodating a fourstroke 9.9, seen many 17' hourstons with 90 and 115's on them.. Hopefully it dont bog it down like fugly was with all my gear n goodies onboard.
