2012 TUNA trips

Ok -what do I need to start-X-raps,tuna clones I have-what type of out riggers'what boards and divers do I need? I have a 24 podded Orca-just to give you an idea of the size of the boat-I usually carry a 168qt cooler on the deck and 2 styrofoam airline typecoolers below the floor. What do you bleed these fish into? Is there a good how to website?? Thanks-just trying to flatten the learning curve. Mike

You'll need a shitpile of ice to col them down. I have 3 - 162 qt coolers full to start. I also strap a plastic garbage can onto my pod, half fill it with ice/seawater and dunk them head 1st after giving them the sicilian necktie for about 15-20 mins and them ice them down whole.

Ya, I will be adding the garbage pail on the swimgrid for that. I am going to spray glue some foam to the outside of it to try to make it last. Next you will have to get some clones. While others will say different i would carry 3 different colors. Here are my 3 goto's. I like to have up to 10 each of these.

Then you will need some splash boats which can be made at home if you have some wood tools.

Left and right pull out splash boats. PMO's (pour mans outriggers) they work great. I like to fish at least 2 on each side.

I would seriously consider getting some splasheres call the rabbit. I do not have a picture.
Use commercial tuna hooks!!
More to come.

Go fish with someone that has slayed them previously and then get your own system figured. Seems that everyone is doing things a little different except for speed, water temp, chloro, and the use of splash boats.

^^^^

What he said. It is a very good idea to go with someone who has been out a few times. Probably the easiest way to get set up with the basic's the quickest.

Hey thanks guys -that's a start-at least I know what I'm looking at-hopefully I'll pick-up a bit in Baja this winter.

whats been the best size and colour xrap??

20 is the best size i think but in all honesty after buying a bunch of them and fishing them I find that they do not really fit into my system. They are fickle. Some pull to the left and some pull to the right and sum just don't work. I am over them. I had a number of birdsnest this season and them dam xraps, if i was using them, they for certain were the main ingredient! There are other cheaper options out there that dive.

Ive been following this thread jealously along.

Watched the old videos where the guys are just flinging them in the boat over there shoulder, how are they doing that? Its like the fished arnt hooked or something. Just wondering what are those orange things? look like a giant float..

Anyone ever looking for some crew plz hit me up!!!!

Where they are flinging them Over their shoulder is commercial pole fishing. The hooks are an open J shape. Very effective commercial method. They also harvest yellowfin in the same method.

I'll bite... please, whats your tuning method? I have two that will be soon swimming in the short square green ocean, IF they don't straighten out

You just play around with the eye in the bill and tweek it from side to side with some needlenose pliers. I have two of the CD18 metal bill plugs and they seem to run straight as an arrow right out of the box.

You have tune them at trolling speed so like 6 or 7 knots. Put one in the water an watch what it does. They will either run to the left or right or kick out to the left or right if they are really bad. Now pull it back into the boat and grab the small wire eye moulded in the plug. If the plug pulls to the right slightly twist the eye to the left. Put the plug will back in the water to test. The first ime you do this the plug will probably start to go too far the opposite direction this means you have bent too far. You want to keep doing this until they swim perfect at the side of the boat. Also Google tuning diving plugs for more info. I have yet to find a plug i couldn't get running right.

Weather forcast (so far) is looking great for Weds through the weekend. We just need the warm water to stick around. I'm seriously thinking of another trip this week sometime. Anyone else planning on another trip? It would be good to go with a couple or few boats.

Twenty per person per day limit. Not sure about the processing for transport regs but head off and guts out would save a bunch of space. I borrowed TunaDons cooler bag for this trip and it was awesome(Thanks Don) As for the limit, It could be caught but I don't think 3-4 guys fishing sport tackle could have enough time in the day to get 80 fish to the boat. A 25 pound Tuna on 30 lb gear can take up to 20 minutes to land but great fun on the Islanders.

thx Ken

more of a meat fishery for us i think if i ever grow a set ta get out there : )
just use the hali gear , even hand bomb em if needed lol..
buddy just bought a sweet 36 Pursuit , they would be interested in an overnighter if the weather window is there ,
they have a LARGE cleaning station onboard , there pretty slick processors , could prob have them all done by the time they get back ta Port,
imagine your pretty bagged upon return..
theve tuna fished several times outta Westport , showed me all there gear ,the pics of all the boats catches down there is MIND BLOWING , holy crap....

he did tell me , once your on them , its not rocket science ,
a handfull of gear gets the job done ...

i will call dfo and see if they can enlighten me on the process..
headin over next week , give ya a buzz

hope ya guys get another kick at it,,,looks pretty cool , HOLY BLOOD BATH there Captain Kid !!!...nice

Craig and Jeffs outting on Thursday

Yup it is great fun especially on the lighter tackle:). Good point about the limits Bod. Most boats are simply not set up for that many fish. I know from the few trips I have done this year (with only one of them in the double digits at 18 fish) that my boat would be pretty much maxed out at 24 fish properly iced etc. With a 3 man crew that would be 8 fish each. I'm pretty ok with that . I just like the experiences one has while out there with the wildlife, trying different spreads, tackle, or techniques, etc.

Cheers,
John
