2021 Ucluelet Reports

Looking to head to ukulele for salmon and hopefully halibut next week. 16' aluminum boat looking to camp on shore. Never fished the area. Looking on the maps I might want to hang out around little beach to the red can. Worth trying for halibut around there? Any other recommended areas to check out.
Thanks,

You might be able to get some halibut there but definitely not a hotspot. It can get ugly for a 16 foot boat around little beach too so make sure to keep an eye on the weather obviously. If it is windy there is lots of places in the sound that will be productive.
Good info in the link for a first timer.

Pretty well all the banks are producing well. South, Outside South, Star Fish, Big Bank, Amphrite. We spent two days working on them on shore and they are there but tough slugging. I think some nicer fish in shore but the numbers aren’t in yet. We did pull off a few off the rocks at Eagles Nest, a beauty 22# and an 18#. But it’s tough. Our days available were getting short so we headed off shore and no problem getting fish. Some really nice fish just under the slot, nice fat chunky fish. A couple we boxed that were just under that pushed the scale to 17#. No problem getting your fish. Some of the nicest marked coho I’ve seen, and in good numbers as well. We fished bait and hardware with both producing. Some days deep up to 120’ today they were a little shallower. 75’ - 90’. The fish offshore are fresh and spunky, lots of run in them, some good battles from 15# fish. Last two days were pretty relaxed so we started at Star Fish and set the course for South Bank and let the wind take us. Set the throttle and barely have to touch the rudder, the wind takes you almost perfect. We picked up fish all along the course no really hot spot or bad spot, pretty easy fishing. We never did make it all the way, caught all the fish we wanted after a couple miles.

Halibut are decent, we picked up a dandy 127cm slab after only about 30 min on the hook. Wind has been nasty in the afternoon so we pulled anchor yesterday and today around 14:00 hrs and came in for rock fish and cod. Going to spend tomorrow looking for some Ling then that’s it for us.

But yah, pretty easy pickings out there right now, get em while you can.

Heading out on the 3rd Tuesday, Wednesday and maybe Thursday. Might do a day on the weekend 7th or 8th inshore but family time will mean lots of toddlers eating sand and beach naps. Likely going offshore Tuesday-Thur and would like a buddy boat, last time we did way to much exploring! We’ve got radar and a good boat but we will be going 15-20kn, so happy to meet up out there if you are in a rocket!

Might bring our Hali anchor but last time we drifted and got our limit, are people anchoring up or drifting?

Would love to connect before hand by phone and then keep in touch on the radio.

Thanks!

Were you talking to me kaelc ?? If you were sorry for the slow reply.

We decided to load up and head home yesterday, sorry about that but any time I am out there if you are there at the same time and you want to share info by all means.

Best of luck out there this year, hope you nail them and have a blast doing it.

Some pics of our trip.

Little boat with a big heart. Was sure impressed with the way she handled the rough water. Fished anything that was fishable and traveled in it with ease. No regrets with this purchase, I have found my lifetime boat.

Off the rocks at Eagles Nest. Had the rod tips just about kissing those rocks, pulled a couple nice hogs out of those back eddies rolling over the underwater boulders. I could smell those big nooks hanging around down there, just had to coax them out.

Lots off bait in those pockets, just had to work them.

Offshore was definitely busier and much easier to troll.

Picked up a few of these and quite a few Black Rock fish as well. Be some nice fish tacos in the future.

And my oldest boys first Halibut and what a fish, lots of power in this one. Hard coming up and when i came up and saw the boat it did a run and darn near made bottom again.

And of course its not all about the fish eating we had to eat too. Hot grilled lunch every day. Most days we let the sea provide but on this day some Alberta beef was in order. Steak sandwich anyone.

Now, count the days until next year. Always goes so fast that trip, some day soon Lord willing I'll be spending a month at a time out there but until then these trips keep me going.

What kind of rockfish is that?I've caught a few of them in the past but tossed them back as I wasn't sure what they were.

Vermillion. My wife caught one in Port Renfrew that was the biggest rockfish I’ve seen yet.

Yah you bet,, good to see you on the site. I enjoyed our evening chats and swapping info especially with a fellow Kingfisher owner lol.
Hope you guys get into some hogs this week.

We‘ll have to keep in touch over the forum and maybe we’ll be up there again at the same time next year.

PS. Still think bait is the way to go lol.

You have to be careful not to be tossing yellow eye in the boat thinking they are vermilion. Although similar it isn’t that hard to tell the difference.

Heading to Ukee Friday and would love to get some squid. Would anyone have an idea if they are still around and what to use for them? Also, we are at the Floathouse Restaurant dock, is that a good dock to fish for squid?
Thanks,
J
