2021 Vancouver-Howe Sound-Sechelt Reports Thread

Out yesterday off Cowans between 9:30 and 12:30 we had 12 springs to the boat. One wild, all the rest hatchery. All over 10lbs with several close to 15. All caught around 120' most on Herring aide.

correct me if I am wrong, but the big influx of hatchery fish are heading down to WA and OR state correct? I assume they are passing by now because it's a far distance to go to get to their destination... And with BC only clipping a very small percentage of fish, that would mean by the time DFO gets their **** together, even if we do get access to hatchery, the big hatchery runs would be past us...

Absolutely NO reason nor plausible excuse for why we can not retain hatchery...

Yup. We are saving them for our fellow American anglers to catch and retain. From posts I've seen they are doing well. Oh well

Maybe I read the SFAB proposal wrong. Even if it gets accepted in its entirety, area 29 is still not open for retention of wild or hatchery Springs. Local hot spots such as the Hump and others areas south of Bowen will still be closed? Maybe that is why I am not as enthusiastic as others about the “decision “ even if and when it gets announced. Oh well, we can always hope for September 1st.

Yes this is why i said it's very important for people to read what is being proposed and its also why i think the proposal will mostly be accepted. Is its extremely limited. Its life support.

UHHHHH, Most of puget sound is closed to any type of salmon fishing including C&R.

We keep veering into the Conservation related topics in this thread. I get there are little to no fishing reports to speak of right now, but that doesn't mean these topics can't be discussed where there are already existing threads in place. People search these threads for years to come for historical information on fishing reports and don't want to wade through all these other topics, while looking for information based on the title of the thread.

Thanks!

Fished defense today. It was atough call, cause I knew thrasher would be good but I was very curious about defense. It was amazing. Very flat on the water. Released three big fish, one of the big ones was a hatchery measured just under 80 cm. Also a bunch of 50-65cm Chinook. I used ap needle spoons. And coho killers. We also got talked to by the dfo. We were all good. But I was surprised to see them out that way. Great day, hope to go back Sunday.

Went over to Thrasher today. Steady fishing in the morning in 200-350ft water, the usual green 3.5” spoons and hoochies. Nothing bigger than 10-12lbs. Then went for Lings. Kept a couple and released three more. We used swim tails and later with no wind we swapped to flat fall jigs and had some success.
From 2-5pm we fished in 400-700ft water and it was slow...tried a 4” tubby tomic but no luck.
A super flat crossing and 8 crabs on the way home.
A Great day!

Man I bought a few of those and fished them hard a few times and never had one hit on them.

I think the lack of wind and hardly any current probably helped us out. The drift/current felt too slow for the paddle tails. We had an epic double header of keeper lings on them today.
I’ve had really good luck with them also when currents allow. I find the strikes were almost always on a fast retrieve after hitting bottom. The drop gets their attention but then you have to give them something to chase. At least in my experience with this jig.

I find this is where the mooching rods shine. Huge pulls.

i agree they do seem to be stalling those hatchery fish will be long gone then maybe we will get a opening

nice haul of prawns for this time of the year i think the commerical opening for prawns starts today
This is the best time of the year i have found, all females have released their eggs and pretty much all jumbo's to be caught, if you hit the right
spots..winter prawns are abundant but mediums.
