I caught 2 springs this week, offshore Ukee. Both had a distinctive yellow dot under the jaw. One was a hatchery, the other not. Any ideas?

thks

I saw these on many springs over the years, especially when I was a commercial troller.I asked about them while in port one trip and was told they are like a birthmark.I'm sure others on here have seen them before as well.

It's a pigment. Was discussed on here last year. Totally natural process. If you google it you will find scientific study done in states on it. I think it was done in Washington state.

thanks for replies, dencope's link is exactly what it looked like. I sent the one head into that fisheries head recovery box

I caught a fish with a yellow stamped mark from the Columbia River hatchery, but that's probably not what you're describing.

I think it means it got lost for awhile and spent some time in the Indian Ocean before finding its way home. ;)

Thrifty's sale item? Lol
