When can we expect the Columbian spring run?

Can anyone fishing out of Victoria/Sooke let me know if they have caught any Columbian springs yet. Or tell me when you do. They are on my list of fish to catch this year! It's really amazing the different shape of salmon depending on what river they are from. Put a Goldstream(long and thin) spring beside a Cowichan(short&stuppy) spring and what a difference! Damn it's going to be a great summer for fishing!

Wow, someone has been misleading you. Goldstream gets very few chinook, unless you have some psychic powers there is no way to tell that a fish is heading into Goldstream unless you catch it in the estuary.
To address the myth of Columbia river fish in JDF strait in may - It is a myth, these fish are heading up the Fraser and its Tribs.

I haven't heard a report for Sooke waters, its still a bit early but anytime. I have heard that the Charlottes are already loaded with fish and they have had one of the best Aprils on record.
Good Luck
TT

lol no chinook in Goldstream? Maybe 10 years ago but their coming back. I was at the fish pen trying to count them. They were in Goldstream at the beginning of September. I have a few native buddies that are in the know.

Lasquiti Isl. at the end of may. North end produces a late arrival of goldies if ya know what your doin and where you are fishin..-dirty

Goldstream had a good run of chinook compared to other years, with some fish over 30lbs and even a 40. I would not say it is back, but it is a start. Good on the people who run the hatchery, this weeks Port Sidney derby is a big sponsor of that hatchery, with most of the money going to salmon enhancment. Now if only i can catch a fish in Sidney.

Good luck Fins-and-Skins, I have a buddy that as entered that tournament but like you said you have to catch a salmon in Sidney. How big will the winner be.......10lbs lol
We will be trying our luck off Beechy Head this Sunday, hopefully we get a spring or two.

The commercial troll guys where doing very well off Esperansa last week..I heard the figure of 30 tons in ten days. These are all columbian fish.DFO had shut the fishery down for a few days but it opened again on the first.I was told they where fishing about 50 miles out and hitting lots of coho as well. They should be moving south so maybe in a couple of weeks?? sooke should see a few.??

Well we were out in Sooke this morning. Talked to the guy running Cheeana Marina and there have been some nice Columbian caught already. From what I here people have been having luck with green flasher/green anchovey head/large anchovy fishing at from 50-70 feet. Good luck everyone and let me know when you get one. Or any spring over 15lbs. Thanks.

If they (the commercial guys)were fishing Esperanza, they were probably on "the Corner", a part of the bank that is several miles off of Esperanza.

The majority of Area G (WCVI Troll Fleet) were working the open areas of the Big Bank the last three days. Opening closed as of midnight last. Some pretty good catches there from what I hear, so shouldn't be long at all (like NOW??) they're beginning to sneak through your waters further south.

Tyme to Go Get 'Em!!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Cheers,
