As you may have heard, there are conservation concerns for 2 Upper Fraser Chinook stocks and Harrison Chinook. DFO has been working closely with the SFAB to develop predictive modelling to estimate the impacts of various regulations measures to achieve reduced exploitation of Chinook in areas and times. The SFAB Chinook Working Group has used the predictive modelling to develop 2 management options for consideration. We have been asked to reach out to local SFAC groups to share the options and gather input as quickly as possible, to help the SFAB Executive provide a final recommendation to DFO.
We will warn you that the options under consideration are not shocking, so there is no need to panic. The options under consideration do involve placing restrictions on fishing opportunity in our Area, but in our view are workable.
Accordingly we are hosting a telephone conference this SATURDAY May 5, at 8:00 p.m. to review the options and hear your feedback. We will then summarize feedback from our SFAC members and submit that to the Chair of the Chinook Working Group. Deadline for our feedback is SUNDAY May 6.
