Registration is now open for the 2024 galiano salmon classic! See poster attached for basic info and a full rules sheet will follow shortly. As in recent past years, derby entrants will be limited based on the dinner venue capacity so please register asap if you plan to attend. We are actively looking for any sponsors and/or prize table donations so please DM me here if you're able to help out. All proceeds raised to be donated to PSF as in past years.

Good prizes for top salmon but also for any halibut (last year there was a beauty caught by Team America / Bonchovy) as well as lingcod hidden weight (@Rain City self proclaimed LING KING). See you all May 25th at Montague Harbour, Galiano Island.

In. Can't wait

here's a scratchy drawing from last year's event showing areas that were opened/closed/hatchery only for salmon. I think things are pretty similar this year based on the regs that just dropped but will have to look more closely at the them before updating the derby map for 2024.

Thanks. And thanks for organizing. I’ll likely head down for this

You probably are filled already with past entrants but is there any accommodations over there?
What time is the start and finish?
I assume the weigh in is at the harbour or is this a catch and release as well?
Moorage available?
As you posted Likely already filled but thought I would ask so maybe for next year.

Hey there, still a couple spots left but will be closing off sales in a couple days. Accommodations are tough around Montague harbour but there are a few airbnb's, etc. If you have a car on the island there are more options. 5am-5pm are derby hours with weigh in at Montague Harbour. Still finalizing format but there will be prizes for retained salmon (clipped), lingcod and hali. Moorage is still available and can be made directly with Montague Marina. They are offering 2 for 1 moorage for derby particpants that weekend. thx

copy/paste below from social media post just now. I know there are a bunch of SFBC members registered for this so look forward to seeing you all there in 9 days!

Ok, with the 2024 Galiano Salmon Classic just 9 days away we hope you are all giddy with excitement! Below are the 2024 derby RULES. While quite similar to last years rules there are a few notable changes this year:

1) No need to measure the length of any fish this year! If you want to register a salmon that you plan to release you simple take a pic of the fish boatside (please don't bring it onboard) and quickly release the fish with a gaff/pliers. The size of the fish will not impact your place on the prize table as all entries for released fish are random this year.

2) To register a released salmon please show your pic to Cory at the marina prior to 5pm and you will be entered into the random prize draw. The register a hatchery salmon simply bring fish to scale at Montague Marina before 5pm.

3) Max 2 total salmon entries per registered angler (can be 2 released fish or 1 retained hatchery and 1 released).

4) Top prize will go to the heaviest weighed hatchery fish.

We'd like to thank this year's sponsors for stepping up with cash and in-kind sponsorship to allow this derby to succeed. Special thanks to: Montague Marina ; Snow Management Systems; Small Gods Brewing; Pacific Net & Twine; Mustang Survival; YETI; Maui Jim; Galiano Inn; @island fisherman magazine; @Chris donaldson; @WestCoast Thumpers.

Good luck and safe passage to all you participants. We are going to give it a go but don’t really know my way around the south end but plan on having fun day on the water.

Well, another Galiano Salmon Classic is in the books! Thanks to all who participated in the 2024 event. Congrats to Amanda Gunn with the winning hatchery salmon at 13.5lbs!
🎣

Hidden weight lingcod was 12.75lbs which Jeremiah Sylvester expertly matched on the dot so congrats to him.
Great to see so many people using best practices for catch and release of fish they either didn’t want to retain or were not allowed to retain due to location / species regs. The boatside gaff release method was out in full force! Thx to @WestCoast thumpers ; Pacific Net & Twine Ltd. for donating some extra gaffs and other gear.
The salmon fishing this year wasn’t as prolific as in past years but I think the weather/wind as well as the big tides played a role in that. Still, some nice salmon and lings weighed in and many more released and sounds like everyone had a great time.
Special thanks to our sponsors for this year: Snow Management Systems; Montague Marina; Pacific Salmon Foundation; Small Gods Brewing; Mustang Survival and Maui Jim
Thx again to Amber Robertson and the Montague Marina team as well as @The Crane and Robin for the fabulous setting and food. See you all again in 2025!

How did everyone make out?
Not too good for us but still had a great day exploring a lot of tacks never tried before. 1 - 65 cm bleeder hatchery and 3 wild released. Apparently we weren't fishing the zone where most of the fish were. Where's Fairfax? Heard it was good there.

Fairfax Point in the southernmost point on Moresby Island so between Sidney and Pender Islands. It's a pretty popular spot so you'll often see boats there and that's the location where the winning hatchery fish was caught this year. Lots of other great spots to explore in the Southern Gulf Islands and if there's a silver lining to some of the recent regulations / closures it's that we can all get out and start exploring some 'new' areas for us.
