Hey guys,
Given the recent tragedies that have impacted our fishing friends this summer I am going to make myself a ditch bag for the boat so my safety equipment is all together and close by.
Here is the minimal stuff you have to carry by law.
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-equipment-size-menu-690.htm
Here are some of the things going into the bag - plan to store it by the helm:
- Multi-tool / Swiss Army knife
- PLB (new gift this summer)
- Air-horn
- Compass (handheld)
- Flares
- First Aid Kit
- Emergency Reflector/Blanket
- Waterproof Lighter
- Flash Light
Personal safety gear (beyond CCG recommended):
- Auto-inflating life jacket (always worn)
- Mustang survival jacket (worn offshore)
- Throw ring with line
- 100' of 1/2" line (old anchor line I put to use)
- Radar reflector
- Radar
- 2 x chartplotters each with GPS (worked out when I purchased my radar)
- Dash mounted compass
- Cell phone (with GPS and Google latitude location tracking installed)
- VHF with DSC connected to GPS and registered MMSI
- 9' Dinghy (I've started carrying this while fishing the West Coast)
What's in your ditch bag and/or collection of personal safety equipment?
