I like to base my judgement on the following real time site as the Environment Canada forcast is just a prediction and can be wrong at times. That being said, it has also been very accurate.

Halibut is Closed for the month of january each year and normaly gets good around the begining of March for most areas. It usually is just rough with 4-8 second wave durations in most areas of jdf east.Hein Bank weather buoy on big wave dave is a good spot to look at for hali fishing.

You can hide out in Becher bay on a Due East and West blow but it can still get choppy. Pedder is often fishable for Winter springs in a due Westerly as well. The North wind is not frequent but works for both bays too. Hope that helps some. Good luck.
