Bickerton calls the fisheries portfolio “the kiss of death.”


“There are always tremendous potential conflicts,” he said Tuesday, “and it is very hard to keep the various constituencies happy.”

Jordan’s rocky tenure is proof positive of that, as is the revolving door that has traditionally been the DFO minister’s office.

Fisheries is one of the Ministries the government uses to audition or reward its members. It’s a low profile Ministerial position that if they do decent at they can be promoted to a more important position and they fail they get kicked to the curb. Long serving members or ultra loyalists can also be rewarded with an appointment to Minister in a move to give them the sought after title of Minister.
