Happy Holidays from the

Sport Fishing Institute of BC
December Update and Happy Holidays

Halibut Announcement Pending:

As the holidays approach and everyone gets busy thinking about time with family and friends, we have been keeping an eye on Ottawa and the potential announcement of a halibut allocation model for the 2012 season. While we are always cautiously optimistic that Ottawa will finally recognize that the 88/12 halibut allocation model is both inequitable and unworkable, we've been wrong before. The only thing we are reasonably certain will occur is that government will make an announcement before the end of the year. We'll keep our ear to the ground and update you as soon as we have any news.

2011 Policy Conference/Big Splash:

The 2011 policy conference is behind us and once again it was a great success. Members of the sport fishing industry, civil servants and observers packed the conference room at the Delta Airport Hotel to capacity to hear presentations on topics including prospects for increasing attention for and support of sport fishing in BC and the SFI by government and the public, halibut, the 2012 salmon outlook and Transport Canada's small commercial vessel safety program. The turnout was great and the interest level was high. Thanks to all those who participated and to our conference sponsors who made this event a resounding success.

Following the conference, we had an even more impressive turnout for the evening's Big Splash gala fundraiser. We sold a record number of tickets and the interest in our outstanding silent and live auction items was high. The Big Splash has always been an important fundraiser for the SFI and this year's event didn't disappoint.

We offer special thanks to the sponsors who supported the Big Splash, the generous donors who provided us with such outstanding auction items and the volunteers who helped the event run so smoothly. Special thanks to Gila Bois who took the helm of this year's event, and really made it her own.

We hope to see all of you again next year.
