November 9, 2012

Open House Events - next week

On November 13th at 6:30 p.m., the SFI will be holding an open house at the Sheraton Four Points Inn in Langford. It will be the first in a series of open houses that we'll be holding this month and we'd like to encourage local anglers to come out and share their views on the recreational fishery with us. On November 14th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. we'll be holding an open house in Campbell River with the Campbell River Guides Association at the Campbell River Community Centre and then again in Port Hardy on November 18th from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Quatse Hatchery and last, in this series, on November 20th from 6:30 - 9:00 with West Coast Aquatic and the West Coast Fishing Guide Association at the Best Western Plus Barclay Hotel in Port Alberni. Details available on the events page of the SFI website

Big Splash and Policy Conference December 6th - register now!

We'd like to remind you that the annual industry Policy conference and Big Splash Gala Fundraiser is approaching. The event will be held at the River Rock Resort and Casino in Richmond on December 6th and we hope to have a strong turnout from those looking to learn more about the key issues facing the recreational fishery in BC. Policy agenda will soon be available. Visit www.sportfishing.bc.ca for updates, more information or to register.

Halibut Allocation Hearing - Malcolm Case

As has been mentioned here before, the SFI and BC Wildlife Federation were granted responder status in a Federal Court hearing that was launched by a group of commercial halibut quota holders who oppose DFO's decision to increase the allocation to the recreational sector from 12% to 15%.

As joint respondents, the SFI and BCWF asked the court to consider a number of questions including how it is that government can suggest and attempt to implement a halibut leasing model that transfers fish between quota holders who don't actually fish to lodge owners or charter boat operators who don't actually fish.

While the hearing was an expensive endeavour for both of our organizations it was equally valuable to have been a participant in the proceedings and be able to provide comment in Federal Court on the halibut allocation issue.

Both organizations would be appreciative of support for participation in the proceedings.

Details regarding the outcome will be provided as received but it should be noted that rulings on cases like these can take quite a while.

We have posted the Memorandum and Fact of Law that the recreational sector provided, as prepared by Chris Harvey, Q.C., as argument during the proceedings - please click here to read or download a copy
