I'm of the run it hard mentality, particularly two-strokes. Back in the 80's, we ran 50 Mercs, and 50 and 60 Yammies wide open every day for multiple 20-30 minute runs then idled for hours fishing. Treated them like that for 1500-2000 hours and I honestly do not recall any blowing up.
Bummer for that new ETEC owner, but I'd say the engine was a lemon, or perhaps propped incorrectly, or he got bad fuel. Today's engines need seriously clean fuel compared to the old carbureted engines.
