Poachers Kill Island Elk... Again

Island's Roosevelt elk fall prey to poachers

The illegal killing of Roosevelt elk on Vancouver Island continues to pose a threat to a population already listed as being of special concern in B.C.

Two more elk were found dead near Nanaimo a week ago following a spike in killings last spring that highlighted a persistent problem on the Island.

“We have these areas, like around Port Alberni as well, where the elk are being poached at an unsustainable rate,” Zeman said. “The result of that is there’s no hunting for licensed hunters. So, in that case, the people who are following the rules and are trying to hunt sustainably are being punished by people who are not.”

“Given B.C.’s biodiversity, we are the most poorly funded jurisdiction in North America when it comes to fish and wildlife resources,” Zeman said.

And the effects are being felt all over the province, he said. “We’re seeing that in chinook salmon. We’re seeing that in record-low moose populations, endangered caribou, killer whales.

“That’s about a lack of investment in conserving our resources.”

As a result, conservation officers and biologists are stretched too thin trying to enforce ever expanding regulations. “Their job has become exponentially harder with fewer dollars to do it,” he said.

Maybe related @Derby if you live in Port?
Son and his gal went out for a late 4x4 after she got off work from her afternoon shift (11pm) a couple days ago, no they dont hunt...

They left Port Alberni and came across some local fn pit lampers cleaning a few deer on a local logging road around 12:30am.

Im in Nanaoose bay... my whole abck yard id forestry land..still waiting to heard back from them

and waiting :(

I will actually be somewhat surprised should they get back to you.
First, they have no manpower.
Second, no money.
Third: It is that time of year, and they probably figure they know who is probably involved. If the assumption is correct, no charges would be forthcoming anyway...

Sad Times...

The CO service has been forcing guys into retirement for years and not replacing them because of budgetary restraints.

Quick story regarding calling CO's. I found a full elk dumped off the dock in 10 ft of water at the Brentwood Bay reserve. This is a private dock owned by FN. I called the CO to report the potential poached or if nothing else a wasted rosey elk. I recieved a call back a few days later and the CO told me that a lot of times the FN dont have 4x4 vehicles and likely drove a car out hunting that day. Because of this, they probably couldn't get the elk to town to process and this is likely the reason it ended up being wasted. I am being serious here, that is what he told me to a T. They never offered to come take a look or look into it at all . Its insane how they stick up for this behavior and its equally ridiculous how a certain group can pit lamp deer and elk over and over again year after year with zero recourse. Soon we will see Elk for sale on the side of the highways beside the totes full of salmon.

Ah ,you forget that they are allowed to make a reasonable income.
Just ask the commercial lobster fishermen on the east coast.
