Outboard overheating at idle

Roger that, I change mine out every season. You would be surprised at how much wear they get. Mind you I put on 400 hours/season.
The problem with not checking them---- once they are used up the aluminium block become the anode and erosion begins on the actual engine :(

New motor to you.
Change them both out in a controlled environment, next to your shop. Buy two sets and keep the other aboard as spare. Now you know how to replace them and you have a spare. Almost guarantees it will never happen again!

You want to zero time consumables like these and fluids when you get used equipment.
