Home Window Renovation Question

Looking to clarify a window replacement question. I recently removed an exterior window, rebuilt and reframed the header and supports, reframed the opening to the window manufacturers specs and am now ready to install the new window. The window is a vinyl frame. The exterior is stucco. I have cut the stucco back to allow for a dry fit and shims as necessary.

The manufacturers directions say to "prepare window openings with papers, sealants and membranes as per building envelope design details.

Do I need to apply a bead of caulking on the inside of the nailing flange to seal it the the paper?

I looked closely at the window that was removed (circa 1990) and there is no evidence of sealant. Once in, the window will be trimmed and sealed.

Short answer, no.

I did the same work on my house a few years ago. After you glue the (Resist) membrane to the opening you can nail or screw the window in.I caulked the wood fill pieces and the finished comb face very well after that. If your going to stucco to finish I'm not sure if you need to do anything.

Hey. I’m an envelope specialist contractor in Victoria. Pm me with some pics and I can provide you with proper details for your specific installation.

Where did you get your window as many outfits only sell installed windows?

Will do. Thanks. Will be later as I am fortunately still working during this period. Appreciate all the responses.

Some of their instructions assume a new framed opening where you are doing a retrofit? The wide flange on the vinyl will cover the cutback you did to remove the old nailing flange. Caulk the flange and put her in, shimming and fastening as per their advice as this will affect warranty. The renovator guy that answered will have great advice too. I was a Glazier for many years self employed for most of it, did lots f this stuff.

Thanks

I replaced the header, the kings, the cripples, the sill and the sill cripples. The amount of stucco I cut back to remove the old window does have the same dimensions as to the new window. On one side however, I was advised to add a second cripple which has created an extra 1.5” space that I intend to fir in a filler strip and paper over. The entire window will be trimmed out in 3-4” rough cut cedar so this space will be covered.

did you cut back beyond the old nailing flange dimension? The retrofit window is designed to cover up your cut-out scar. But if you have gone further, yes, a trim board will work. Can you put a piece of flashing up top?

I actually cut up to 1/8” inside the original flange in a few spots so I have to remove some more stucco to get the new window fully inset. Yes, flashing could be installed but the original do not have any. Where the window sits in relation to an roof overhang negates the need. I plan to trim out the frame because that is a lot easier for me than trying to replicate the existing stucco pattern and design

sounds like you do not have a renovator style with a huge 3" flange to cover scars. That is fine but accuracy is paramount. Post some pics when done, sounds like you know what you're doing. Vinyl is amazing for sound deadening and the lack of thermal transfer in the winter....plus zero maintenance.

Just an update and a HUGE THANK YOU to @MadJigga! Not only did he set my min at ease, he put me on to a better membrane product (Blueskin WB) and primer that seems superior than the paper I had planned. A little snarly today but I need to trim back a bit of the stucco around the flange, set the membrane in place, and get the window nailed in.
Thanks again for all the other pieces of input. Now back to seeing if @Stizzla has posted any updates.
