A federal court has ruled that the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans cannot open a fishery in Haida Gwaii this year.

An injunction was given to the Haida Nation, against the federal government, to prevent the re-opening of a commercial herring fishery on the nation’s north coast.

“This win is another step to building herring stocks, and in doing so, contributes to an economy that will provide a reasonable living for our people, and the path of reconciliation with Canada,” said Haida Nation President Peter Lantin in a statement.

I'd love to see our provincial government do exactly the same thing to stop the herring fishery around Vancouver Island. If it works for the Haida (and good for them) then why not for the rest of us?

I wonder how much taxpayers money is wasted when big business TELLS the government to open the fishery and then the gov uses our money to fight the injunction and appeals........

Total waste....if the big business wants the fishery open, then THEY should have to go to court and put up the costs.....will never happen, but would be nice to see.

Interesting news!!

Cheers

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans called off the opening of the commercial roe herring fishery in Barkley Sound near Port Alberni late Saturday night, citing poor egg quality in the test fishery.

“I suspect they were looking for a reason to cancel it,” said Tseshaht Chief Hugh Braker, who got the message just before midnight. His First Nation and four others were prepared to block the commercial fishing vessels on Sunday in the latest attempt to prevent over-fishing of roe herring in what they say is a sensitive area.

When they got the news the fishery opening was cancelled they cancelled the protest.

“We’re taking it as a victory for us but the big winner is the herring,” he said, adding he hopes to work out a long-term sustainability plan with the government.
