Recreational halibut fishery closed – Juan de Fuca MLA wants system changed

Sept 6, 2011

The MLA for Juan De Fuca says the closure of the recreational Halibut Fishery impacts tens of thousands of anglers and hundreds of local businesses and jobs.

The NDP's John Horgan made the comments after the fishery closed at midnight Monday Night.

Horgan says the Department of Fisheries and Oceans caps the recreational fishery at 12 per cent of the allowable catch, with 88 per cent going to commercial quota holders. But, says Horgan, ownership of that commercial quota has become concentrated onto fewer boats and fewer boats leaving local coastal communities with fewer jobs.

Speaking at a Victoria sporting goods store, Horgan said “this closure will make September a lot rougher for those who traditionally spend their time on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.”

Horgan calls on the federal government to rework the halibut allocation formula.
