Closed-Containment Fish Farms - Norwegian supermarkets respond to customer concerns
While we haven't heard much new of the fish farming front in recent months, this story struck us as a potential sign of things to come. According to Norwegian National TV2, four major supermarket chains in that country have announced that they will no longer sell farmed salmon sourced from open net-pen farms. According to the story, the chains have told the farming sector that they will only carry their products if they are produced in closed-containment systems and can demonstrate that the fish are disease free and sustainably-produced. While Norway is one of the smaller markets in Europe, it is still home to many of the world's larger fish farming companies, and the announcement may well be a sign of a shift in the marketplace for farmed salmon. More importantly, it also appears that once again retailers (based on feedback from customers) are leading on this key environmental file, while government appears to be playing catch-up.
