DFO pretty cheery about more sienes and gillnets in alberni canal than sport boats.

The problem with the statement that “there is little risk to aggressive fishing plans” in your July 14th bulletin is that there is and has been the greatest risk ever imposed and realized by the local recreational fishery and the local economy. Our once productive and attractive recreational fishery has collapsed completely on a gigantic run.
There are more gill-netters fishing inner Barkley Sound than there are sport boats and, this afternoon, there were more seiners fishing in Alberni inlet than sport boats! Unprecedented, unnecessary and unacceptable.
Everybody should have a fair chance at such a bonanza run. We have to find ways and develop fishing plans, times and areas that allow at least some chance of catching a Sockeye with sport gear if this host community is going to survive.

<<July14_Bulletin_summary.pdf>>

We maintained the current forecast of 1.4M as 'back half' of the run uncertain, although judging from the commercial gillnet CPUEs plenty off sockeye still migrating into Barkley Sound. (Low CPUEs with other gear are likely related to fish behaviour: rapid migration rate through the inlet, spread out.)

The escapement rate slowed down somewhat over the last week, but not much. Total escapement estimated at about 695K adults.

This escapement rate is unprecedented we have achieved the escapement target already for the 1.4M run size.
The age 5sub2 fish from the very productive 2008 sea entry year are about expected levels.
The age 4sub2 fish from the 2009 sea entry year are well above expectation.
Jack age 3sub2 fish now showing up.

The reality today is that we are all interdependent and have to co-exist on this small planet. Therefore, the only sensible and intelligent way of resolving differences and clashes of interests, whether between individuals or nations, is through dialogue.

Good on Bob Cole and Island Girl for keeping the pressure up! We must continue to pressure our politicians who ultimately call the shots for DFO.
