cracked manifold -- should be found during mech. inspection

I pull my risers and manifolds off each fall after coho season. I can clean them up and inspect them. New gaskets are cheap. I also run an electric bilge heater with a built in thermostat all fall/winter. It not only keeps the bulge warm it keeps it dry. Electricity is cheap and you can’t put a price tag on peace of mind.

An electric bilge heater sounds like a fancy incandescent bulb. I used to fill my inboard with pink stuff but after a year I decided to just drain the block and manifolds. I've been good for quite a few years and don't think I would winterize any other way now.

I had a Malibu 20 Alaska bulkhead some years back. Went on a fishing trip a ways from town and on the way back, the engine, a Volvo 4.3l V6 (chevy) engine barely ran. Both Manifolds were cracked, and the motor had been drained of freshwater over the winter. Never was sure what happened. Its a trade-off, inboards are cheaper, but it seems they are not as reliable as outboards.
