Area F Troll is over by approx 25% on allowable WCVI Chinook. I have heard the fishery and numbers were fast and furious.

I would be curious what is happening in SEAK on WCVI intercepts?

Subject: FN0495-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Troll - Area F - Areas 1, 2, 101 and 142 - Demonstration ITQ Chinook fishery update and WCVI Chinook DNA results.

Area F troll fisheries in the North Coast are monitored inseason using DNA
analysis to monitor impacts on WCVI Chinook. The allowance for mortalities of
WCVI Chinook in the area F fishery is 3,477 Chinook. Genetic DNA sampling
obtained from 661 Chinook salmon and 21 vessel landings from June 9 to 15 in
Areas 1 and 101 has been analyzed and the composition of WCVI Chinook is 7%.
Based on an estimated troll catch of 66,000 Chinook harvested from June 9th to
20th and the genetic sampling results, the preliminary catch estimate for WCVI
Chinook is 4,620 Chinook. This estimate will be updated based on additional
samples from catch landings.

The Salmon Licence Area F Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) Demonstration
Chinook Troll Fishery will therefore close at 23:59 hours, Tuesday, June 21st

Am i reading that part right?

Yep, the NC troll Chinook fishery is divided up into equal quota shares to catch/trade/sell. Based of course on staying within their WCVI % cap.

Am i reading that part right?

wtf is a demonstration ITQ chinook fishery? ITQ (I take them Quickly!) What do you think lippy maybe we could have one if they close the hali season early...
suprised holmes hasn't got on it...sammy

Das is not good..

Heard some of the guys out there were avging 350 per set all season, compared to only 80 at same time last year...everything so far this year is pointing to an amazing year for Chinook

Area F ITQ is a troll fishery. Each boat has about 460 chinook as their season allocation this year. Area F trollers opted for the ITQ method and area G trollers ( WCVI ) are still using an overall fleet allocation and once the fleet has caught their allocation the fishery is closed. For area F there is a certain percentage of WCVI chinook that are allowed in the mix. I think it is about 16% WCVI chinook allowed in the catch. At the present time the WCVI % bycatch is too high therefor the fishery is now closed. Area G trollers used to make a living on the bank off Ukee with the bulk of the season being in July and August. At present the old commercial fishery on the bank has been replaced with a new commercial fishery.

IronNoggin fishes out of Ukee commercially. He's pretty familiar with the troll fishery of various areas. Wonder what he has to say?

I just had a conversation with a guy who fishes the Charlottes commercially. The 16% figure that I used is incorrect. The bycatch figure that they are being held to is 3600 WCVI chinook. They have caught 4200 WCVI chinook according to the sampling that has been done. The chinook troll fishery on the north coast is now closed until further notice. From the info I got the fishing for chinook was much better than the past 2 seasons. The sport fishing off Langara will be excellent with no commercial trolling taking place right now.
