Your Ride

The Double Eagles are still built in Richmond. I'm told the original owner sold out just recently. Not sure about the exact location for mine; I'll ask my dad. You're down to a choice of two.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

OK, so it's a Sangster. :) I'm actually putting it back together this weekend.

Knuckles, you win the prize.
Dean, you get door number three.

What was that about a 21 foot Grady for over $100000? You can buy a 30 foot Grady Marlin which is 5 years old with full electronics, twin 250 Yamahas and just 400 hours for $140000 Cad..or $160 Cad with Four Strokes...

Make mine a 2006 300 Marlin Grady with Twin 275 Mercury Verados with a 25 kicker..Smart Craft etc... it won't be long it'll be mine!

Hey

hey magician call Capstan Marine and ask them for a price on a new 209 escape Grady with the above mentioned accesories and after tax it will be $100,000 which is what I said.

SWC

I do the Fishing, God does the Catching!

Precisely why I won't be buying from Capstan... :) :)

verados?! lol

To fish or not to fish,
What a stupid question!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time :D

You know Red, it may be that even though others here have better rides than us...when it comes down to it, the fish really don't care if your rod is dragged from a cadillac or a gremlin. As long as you have the right stuff in the water, the fish will come. (Me and you man, beater boat buddys!!) <grin>

Yeah...I know..when you're the best..people wanna trash you...kinda makes me wonder why Yamaha doesn't win so many races...I ran Yamahas and I've run Mercs...2 stroke Merc's kick Yammy's Butts...and when Verados are engineered by an Engineer with Porsche know how, you bet your buck that they're gonna be good. Especially in the Offshore big HP class.

At any rate...that's where I'd put my money...

Although..I'd have to say...Yammys 4 strokes are nothing to sneeze at...but with the Merc Verados...there's a changing of the guard in the BIG HP classes, and sure they had some early problems...but now they've got everything worked out.

But either way..I bet I'll probably end up buying a boat loaded to the hilt with electronics etc...maybe a 2003 or 2002...most of the 30 Marlin Gradys come with twin 250 Yammys...expensive to run..but hard to deny the fuel economy, speed, and range relative to the 4 strokes...not to mention the service and initial capital outlays which 4 strokes demand...but then again...I'm trolling with a kicker anyways...

I've been in to see the fellas @ Capstan...and they're an interesting lot...but not necessarily interested in doing a sale unless they can make a killing on it. Last year they did a 30 Marlin which was loaded to the hilt and the nicest they'd ever done..and it went to a guy that ran an oil co. I think...overall Capstan's Service is top notch..but when it comes to negotiating $$$$ forget it...it's top dollar with them. Mind you, most of the people putting out the $$$ there, money is NO object, and it's corporate or company funded.

On the eastern seaboard Grady's are a dime a dozen!

Have owned:
1960's 18ft Homebuilt Wood Lake fishing boat with 15hp Chrysler SeaHorse - great boat, crap motor
1970's 14ft Gregor Alum Fishing boat - oar powered - great boat for a kid spend summers trout fishing
1978 18ft Wooldridge Flatbottom Sled w 90hp Yamaha Jet
1999 18ft Motion Marine MojetSX Jetsled with 175hp Merc Sportjet and 8hp Yami Kicker
2001 20ft Motion Marine MojetSX Outback w// 175hp Merc Sportjet & 8hp Yami Kicker

Presently own:
1997 25ft Grady-White Voyager w/ 250hp Yamaha and 8hp Yama Kicker
2003 19ft Fish-Rite Driftboat w/ Catarac oars, 74lb Minnkota electric motor and 8hp Yamaha kicker.

My favorites would be the two presently owned and the 2001 Motion Marine Jetsled - hated selling that one.

First power boat for me was a 14 ft Sangster with 70 horse Johnson. No idea how old.
Went like stink! I took out everything inside, put in a new floor and 2 swivel seats. Motor finally went.

Now I have a 16ft late 70's Double Eagle with 1985 60 horse Johnson and 6 horse kicker. Electrics, VHF, Handheld GPS. Great boat for what it is.

It is very sea worthy, handles the slop real well and catches lots of fish. It is older and ugly but sure makes it fun to come into the dock amongst all the big fancy boats with a load of fish!! Or into a hali derby with a 70 lber on board! LOL!!

I also have a 9 ft zodiac with a freestanding swivel seat in the center for the lakes. I run an electric or the 6 horse depending on where I am.

fishin_magician got that one 100% correct.

I picked up mine for 14K less that same found on westcaost. Transport cost Conneticut-Oregon was $3,100.

Look to NE, and Great Lakes area Hulls as they will have lower hours for the same price (winter storage) and many will be fresh water only/primarly used boats. It took me about 4-months of shopping and I waited for the on-set of winter to enhance my bargaining postion before I found what I could afford but definately worth the effort. Florida and Gulfcoast hulls can be good buys but you really want to do you inspections and homework. I can connect you will a very good guy when you are ready to transport you purchase - he came to me through three other Ore/Wash guys who had very good experiences with him.

Good place to start is www.greatgrady.com. Whalers are another great boat to found in good numbers out east.

Either way check out http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/advancedSearch.jsp as they seemed to consistantly have the largest inventory of used Grady's.

Spec: That's funny. Maybe your dad built my boat. I remember going down and looking through a window at the keeen new boat being built.

Knuckles: Yup, Sangster had a shop on Coal Harbour near the Trader Vics restaurant in the Bayshore Hotel. The hotel is still there (minus Trader Vics). All the old warehouses are long gone and replaced by expensive highrise condos.

Lyse: I here you :). You have to start somewhere. It would be funny if you had a great big boat that couldn't catch fish. I also think it's worthwhile to first learn (and appreciate) lots of different things (about boats, boating and fishing) with a smaller boat. Besides, I don't suffer too much: I've got everything needed on a boat my size.

T2: You have one of those fancy new yachts. Mine is vintage 1969/70. I guess yours is too new to have had fiberglass fuel tanks like mine had before I installed custom aluminium ones. Double Eagles are great fishing boats, but I don't ever recall seeing one in all red gelcoat.
