Public market to light Ukee's Friday nights

A public market is set to hit Ucluelet's Village Green July 6.

"We're really excited to see the Ukee public market move forward and to showcase all the wonderful West Coast artisans, farmers, bakers, and chefs out here," says Ukee Public Market Society board member Joleen Morrow.

The society held a meeting Monday to discuss plans for the market and to make a final decision in regards to overcoming one final wave.

A public market is set to hit Ucluelet's Village Green on July 6. The market is set to become a summertime fixture on Friday nights from 5 to 9 p.m. Interested vendors can purchase a membership fee for $100 and drop-ins will be charged $10 per market.

"There's a requirement for insurance when you're hosting an event on district property," Ucluelet's manager of planning Patricia Abdullah tells the Westerly News.

"They are independently coming forward and running this. It's not a district-run event- long before it went to council we informed them that insurance was a requirement."

The costs associated with securing insurance was a setback for the budding society, but a recent alliance with the BC Farmers Market Association as well as an offer from the district to cover the cost of the required insurance on a loan basis has the market's engines churning.

The society hopes to be able to raise enough funds by the end of the market's summertime run to be able to pay back the $350 district loan.

The society will be on the hook for a $200 membership fee to the association to be able to access its group insurance and will also need to pay $300 for directors' insurance, according to Jeni Christie, a market supporter who helped facilitate the insurance process.

The society has raised money through membership fees to put toward these costs, says Christie.

Interested vendors can purchase a membership for $100. Drop-ins will also be welcome at a cost of $10 per visit.

Grants and sponsorships were also discussed as means to supplement funding.

The market will be named Ukee Night Market to ensure both vendors and market-goers are aware of the market's evening operating time.

Advertising for the first Ukee Night Market will get underway with plans in place to promote the event during Ucluelet's Canada Day market and Tofino's June 30 Saturday market.

Applications for membership will be available at these events and membership information can also be obtained by emailing ucluelet market@gmail.com.

The society is hoping to add music to the market place to draw crowds towards the vendor's wares so West Coast musicians are encouraged to contact the society for potential vibe creation possibilities.

Next year the society hopes to bring the Ukee Night Market to West Coasters earlier than this year's July 6 start date.

"We were just running into some funding issues and now we have more people coming out of the woodwork committing to membership fees and we've come up with the funds so now were moving forward," Morrow says. "We're super happy that the district is willing to help us by covering the insurance cost until the end of the season so we can get the market going."

The market will be held in Ucluelet's Village Green outside the district office on Friday nights from 5 to 9 p.m.
Vendors will be permitted to set up at 3 p.m. and will be required to have cleared the area by 10 p.m.

The new aquarium is another attraction. Have not been inside yet, but it looks very attractive on the outside.

would definitely love to visit a West Coast Island market place...the local artists and artisans do incredible work, something difficult to find on the mainland, especially so steeped in Coastal Traditions...may just be worth a Boo, thanks for the tip Dog.
