Yamaha blowing smoke

Confused

Active Member
I have a yamaha 2002 four stroke that blew some smoke out the other day when I started it. It ran fine, and never persisted beyond starting it. What would cause this?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer to your question but you sure haven't given us much info to go on! What colour was the smoke? Blue? White?

What engine is it?
Was it tilted before being started?
If it's a portable engine was it stored with the correct side up?
Is the oil level in the correct range?
How many engine hours?
How long since the engine was last started?

My first thought was a bit of oil leaking in to the cylinders but there could be other causes.

It is a 115.

I ran it all morning, got back to the dock, then started it back up to put it on the trailer. The smell was definitely oil. The engine has about 400 hours. Oil level seems fine.

They will puff blue on start up when the choke is on. It's normally just for a quick second
