WTF is going on at Beecher Bay Marina?

Buddy I fish with talked to a guy yesterday who lives in the trailer park. They all got 30 days notice to vacate. Saw Mike today and asked him whats going on. He said he didn't know. Yeah right.
I heard that there may be a casino coming, hotel, Silver streak boats purchased it. That cant be true as its native land and can only be leased not purchased.
Anybody know what is going on?

I know that some people weekend there for the fishing season. But others call it home. I hate to hear that some folks are being displaced. There are going to be some low income folks suffer with only 30 days notice. Sad.

Natives are making way for a resort with condo's, sad to only give them 30 days notice, some of them trailers are embedded pretty good..

Gov. has to step in and do something about this. What a ignorant moved on the part of the native band. Not good for public relations.

All I can say it that I hope they still keep a functioning launch with ample parking!

If not where will people launch their boats in Sooke? There are not a lot of good options.

The new Prestige launch is a bit of a joke, (no cleaning table and not enough parking), Jocks Dock launch many times is too shallow for boats over 20 ft. Sunny Shores requires a longer run into Sooke harbour and now they are thinking of putting in a 5 kmh speed limit in the harbour! Pedder is too far away for fishing most of Sooke and who knows when the Butler Brothers site will come on line?

Hopefully, there will be still room for a decent launch amidst the plans for a resort and all the condos. Considering how important fishing is to the local Sooke economy, I don't understand why there are not more launches - especially a decent municipal launch to benefit the local economy!

VERY VERY SAD I know some people with units in there and they have put a ton of money into there sites new decks upkeep of of them etc , I must admit thats a real ignorant thing to do to all of them people. I could see maybe after the summer doing something like this but now WOW.
Sorry to say I have lost all respect for them. I sure hope there must me be some legal thing where you have more than 30 days I sure hope so for all people involved.
In that article they say then need

"Our membership is in need of better jobs and housing," asserts Chief Russell Chipps, also in the press release. "We are committed to creating a sustainable development plan that the Cheanuh people will be proud of."

WOW maybe clean up what you have????? that place is a mess , same thing happened to some people in north saanich years ago and that turned out bad for them. what a joke!!!!

Wow you are worried about a boat launch and these poor people are loosing their homes!!!

He knew

MIke knew what was happening..do you think he was for whatever is happening out here...No! There isnt a casino that was years ago..no resort..it was a land code amendment...People in the campground knew because this place is small ..there are more campsiters in the campsite than there are natives that populate the reserve they are on. Got to the BEecher Bay news group and look at all of the stuff posted on there..Is a facebook group..request an add and they will add you. Please get all facts straight..thanks..

I feel very sorry for those people that it's there full time home. That being said I have known many people that have had places there, and some that still do. But it is always been known that it was a "Campsite" and at some point in time that this might happen. The people that I know that had places there moved out because of this, and I'm sure they are quite happy they did now. The others and one in particular stand to come out of this not as well. What I don't understand what the rush is. Could the Band not do the right thing and give these people some amount of reasonable time to get there affairs in order. Most of these trailers/homes are completely built around. I understand the Band wants to make a better life for it's people, as we all do. But there has to be a way that they and the people that are being displaced can work together. As far as the ramp is concerned I'm betting It will be gone as far as day launches are concerned. Once development starts there will be limited access in to the area because of insurance issues. I'd also bet that once it is developed those condos will come with moorage if they want. I do hope that I'm wrong and this can work out for all parties concerned. The last thing we need is to loose another launch and marina.

Of course I care about these people losing their homes - that goes without saying! I was merely pointing out another related side of this unfortunate development and a long standing and worsening situation in Sooke - yeesh!

When it really comes down to it it is a complete lack of respect and a down right not so nice thing to do to people ESPECIALLY at the summer ... why they did it now is beyond me as you know permits and etc take forever all those people displaced for summer fishing and vacationing of friends the list goes on,
im sure its going to sit vacant forever too... they couldnt have done this after the summer???? A$$holes .....SHAME on them!!!!!

whole in the water,
We just have to disregard silly statements like that. Unfortunately there are a few folks on here who just jump around threads and critique anything and everything. You don't have to defend your comments. 95% of the users on here are civil. Just write to them and disregard the peanut gallery. LOL

We moor there. There are lots of folks out there with alot of bucks. Unfortunately I am not one. We pay about $94 a month, whereas that same spot would be over $200 at pedder. I just cant afford that. The guys that work at cheanuh are great. The facilities on the other hand are not so good. But despite everything bad we can say about them. Its cheap and I can afford it. But the only reason it remains so cheap is that it lacks. I have a feeling some investor has seen an opportunity and the days of cheap moorage are over. But i hope not.

Like said, very sad situation and I am certain that there is a big developer pushing the band to get it empty so that they can get going with the development so that things are ready for next season.

So sad I feel sorry for all the people that have made a home there. I also remember the same thing that happened is Sooke with big plans to build a mall and all the businesses were evicted. Guess what 5 plus years later an nothing has been built.
Lets just see what happens here. Is some revenue better than no revenue?
